YouTube and your website

YouTube is a video sharing site, which allows you to upload videos for free – which can really help with your own hosting costs!

You can add a video to YouTube for the world to see, or you can keep it private – but if you’re keeping it private, remember YouTube could change their terms at some time so be sure you’d be happy for the world to see it.

The point of YouTube is that you can search for videos – information, music, guides, tv – and watch them online. You can also get some code from the site which you can add to your own website to “embed” a video there – meaning the video appears on your site and can be played there, but is actually coming from YouTube (meaning you’re not paying to host it).

The joy of YouTube is that you can potentially have a very big audience for your video. Of course, there’s a lot on YouTube so just uploading it doesn’t mean people will flock to it, but it’s a start from which you can promote your video.

Since Google bought YouTube you can log in to YouTube with your Google account details.

Another video sharing site is Vimeo, although videos uploaded to their free accounts should be for non-commercial use. They have cost effective premium options though, with greater controls around privacy.
