iPhone 7 vs iPhone 8

It's that time of year again, where Apple releases the newest pieces of tech and people start
going wild.

Marking the tenth anniversary of the first iPhone, Apple's new device is expected to be larger than the iPhone 7 but smaller than the iPhone 7 Plus. The new iPhone 8 is expected to have a handful of exciting new features, including a facial recognition security and an edge-to-edge screen.

The new iPhone 8 won't be cheap (are iPhone's ever?) and rumours suggest it will be upwards of £900 and will probably be available in limited quantities at first. Which although sounds expensive isn't too bad considering the iPhone 7 Plus has a starting rate of £719 for 32GB storage and costs £819 for the 128GB model and £919 for the 258GB model. And the iPhone 7 costing £599 for 32GB of storage and rises to £699 for the 128GB model and £799 for the 258GB model.

The new screen size of the iPhone 8 is to be smaller than the iPhone 7 Plus but with a larger screen so it will be a little larger than the iPhone 7's 4.7-inch screen. The iPhone 8 has a 5.8-inch OLED display that almost covers the entire front of the phone. The iPhone 7 Plus has a 5.5-inch screen. The screen size for the iPhone 8 is bigger than the 7 Plus as the screen goes right to the edges and doesn't have room at the bottom for a home button and the front facing camera also take up a lot less room than the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus.

Apple is ditching the home button to change the shape of the screen to make the device flatter in order to achieve this. Without the home button, the screen will also sink to the base of the phone, while the front facing camera will sit in a notch at the top of the screen.

The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus is currently available in Space Grey, Gold, Rose Gold, Jet Black, Silver and limited edition Red. Apple hasn't said yet whether or not it will be available in all of these colours. Many reports have said that it will only be available in three colours. These are likely to be: Black, Silver and a Copper colour called "Blush Gold". With the iPhone 8's screen covering nearly all of the front of the phone, Apple is expected to get rid of the white version in favour of an all black front so the edge to edge display looks cleaner.

The camera is also set to be very different from the iPhone 7, with the camera going verticle rather than horizontal. We're not entirely sure why they have done this but it looks pretty snazzy. The iPhone 7 Plus has a 12MP dual camera, which has 2z optical zoom and lets smartphone photographers create depth effects. Whereas the iPhone 8 is expected to have a powerful dual lens camera and many other features that haven't been released yet.

Apple is expected to replace Touch ID (the iPhone's system of identifying users through a fingerprint scan), with facial identification as the primary method of unlocking the iPhone 8. Apple released proof for the new facial recognition system, which has long been rumoured, was recently revealed in a leaked code for Apple's HomePod smart speaker.

Other new features the iPhone 8 could possibly have that are not on the iPhone 7 include wireless charging and water resistance.

The iPhone 8 will also come with Apple's latest software, iOS 11. The new operating system features a redesign of iOS 10, which currently powers the iPhone 7, including a new control centre, peer-to-peer Apple pay and an upgrade for Siri.

The iPhone 7 has an A10 Fusion chip, described as lightning fast. The iPhone 8 is expected to come with a faster A11 chip inside.
